Most mountains have a talus (rock) field at the mountain base. Simulate this by placing a few medium-sized pieces of gravel at the base of each large stone. See what I have done by looking a the leftmost large stone in the photo above. You might consider using larger stones than I am using for a better effect; this was all that I had at the time.
