 really sick cactus

my cactus is really sick it looks a little yellow and swively some of its tops have just swiveled up dried out and fell off and couple tops are almost black and gooey is there anything i can possable do to help the poor thing ..can the tips that are good be stuck in dirt or sand?? can the bad tops be cut off??any help would be reat i dont think it will make it another day...thanks
